Q-n-A with Tournament Director Gabe Norona

gabe_interviewGabe Norona grew up in South Florida playing tennis. He played high school tennis at powerhouse St. Thomas, the same time a member of school's women's team, a young Chris Evert, was garnering most of the tennis headlines. You can classify Gabe as a certified tennis junkie, who prior to becoming a tennis promoter also coached players on the pro tour. As a fan he followed all of the top players, but claims John McEnroe as his favorite. Tennis is a major part of his life and the BMW Tennis Championship is his passion.

How did the BMW Tennis Championship come about?
By chance. I was traveling with some of the tour players when Indian Wells was expanding to a 10-day tournament and I decided to approach the ATP with the idea of hosting a dual entry event here before Key Biscayne. They thought it was a good idea and the rest is history.

What was your goal when you first started the tournament?
To host a first class event with world class players.

What reputation has the BMW Tennis Championship earned from players on the Tour?
We treat the players first class and it has a tremendous reputation for being this way. Many players have told us we host an event that eclipses many of the larger events. This shows by the top players we are able to attract on annual basis.

What feedback have you heard from fans?
They love the tennis in a relaxed environment. It's easy access and the price is right. They see big name players, good tennis in a fantastic setting.

What are the most memorable highlights from the past five years --on and off the court?
On court it's just great tennis with many top ranked players, Off the court...it probably has to be the celebrities in attendance from Anna Kournikova to pro hockey and pro football players.

What's the most rewarding part of being a tournament director?
Seeing the crowd enjoy good tennis and hearing the great comments from the players.

What should first time attendees expect to experience at this year's tournament?
Good tennis really up close in a fantastic intimate setting.
Truly enjoyable!

What does the future hold...is there anything you would like to change?
This event is only going to get better. I have a great business partner/co-owner of the event in Jeff Miller, a fantastic title sponsor in BMW, we have a first-class nationally award winning facility, great support from the community and a terrific product on the court.
