BMW Tennis Championship Tournament History

coloredtennisballs2009: En-route to a career-best season that includes an appearance in the French Open finals, Robin Soderling defeats top seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets to win his first championship of the season.  After losing his opening match at the ATP Masters event in Indian Wells, Soderling arrives in Sunrise and has to advance through the event qualifier to earn a spot in the main draw.  The Swede, who finished the 2009 ATP season ranked No. 8, drops only one set in his eight matches on his way to claiming the 2009 singles title.    In doubles, the unseeded American team of Eric Butorac and Bobby Reynolds upsets the No. 1  team of Jeff Coetzee and Jordan Kerr.

2008: Robin Haase becomes the second unseeded player to with the BMW Tennis Championship singles title with his three set win over former top five player Sebastien Grosjean.   The Serbian doubles team of Janko Tipsarevic and Dusan Vemic wins the doubles championship.

2007: Fifth seed Gael Monfils beats Andreas Seppi in three sets to claim the singles championship.   Seppi's road to the finals includes wins over Juan Martin del Potro, Gustavo Kuerten and Nicolas Massu.  Konstantinos Economidis and Kristof Vliegen wins the doubles championship over del Potro and Sebastian Prieto.

2006: The tournament event title changes to the BMW Tennis Championship.  Second seed Dmitry Tursunov and fifth seed Alberto Martin advance to the singles finals with wins over fourth seed Ivo Karlovic and third seed Andreas Seppi respectively.  Rain on championship Sunday washes away the title match for singles and doubles.

2005: The tournament moves south to Sunrise, FL to the award-winning Sunrise Tennis Club.  Third seed Karol Beck defeats Davide Sanguinetti in the singles finals.  Top players in the draw includes Mark Philippoussis, Dominik Hrbaty, Gilles Simon and Ivo Karlovic.    The top seed doubles team of Rick Leach and Travis Parrott don't drop a set on its way to the title.

2004: The inaugural tournament takes place in Boca Raton, Fla as the Pro Tennis World Open.  The first-ever event main draw includes Todd Martin, Thomas Enqvist, Mario Ancic, Guillermo Canas and Igor Andreev.  Unseeded Juergen Melzer of Austria claims the first championship with a three-set win over Enqvist.  Melzer also knocked-off Martin and Andreev on his way to the finals.  The Russian doubles team of Andreev and Dmitry Tursunov won the doubles title.
