monfils_18thMarch 18, 2007

(Sunrise, FL) - Record crowds showed up Sunday to see French sensation Gael Monfils win the singles championship in his first showing at the BMW Tennis Championship at Sunrise Tennis Center, facing off with one of Italy's young stars, Andreas Seppi.

Monfils never faced a tournament seed all week, taking out wild card Jesse Levine, qualifier Dusan Vemic, wild card Nenad Zimonjic (who had defeated the tournament's No. 1 seed, Dmitry Tursunov), and Ivo Karlovic, who retired in the second set in the semis.   Seppi had defeated wild card and 3-time French Open champ Gustavo “Guga” Kuerten in the first round, Juan Martin Del Potro (who had beaten No. 7 seed and fellow Argentinean Juan Monaco), Oliver Marach and No. 6 seed Nicolas Massu in the semis.

KARLOVIC RETIRES; MONFILS VS. SEPPI IN SINGLES FINAL

March 17, 2007

Sunrise, Florida, March 17, 2007 - Twists and turns in today's semi-final matches at the BMWTC, monfils_17th_02as one singles match ends in retirement and the tournament's 6 th seed fades in the other.

On a brilliant sunny afternoon, the crowd settled in to watch a match that promised power, speed and charisma - two tall, lanky players who cover a lot of court, and play with intense passion.   In fact, the battle between young French star Gael Monfils and the big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic was physical from the start.

The first set was tight, going to a tiebreaker with no breaks of serve.   Monfils knew the big-serving Karlovic would be trouble if he got behind - and in fact Karlovic was able to string together five straight points to win it 7-6(4).   In all, Karlovic cranked nine aces in the first set.
