Becker, Stepanek & Simon to Headline Singles Play on Thursday
[3] Benjamin Becker (GER) vs. Andrey Golubev (KAZ) - Noon
Benjamin Becker won a tough three set first round match over Florent Serra (FRA) on Wednesday afternoon and will have less than 24 hours to prepare to play an opponent he's never played before - Andrey Golubev (KAZ) - in the second round of the 2010 BMW Championships. Golubev reached the second round by defeating Nicolas Massu (CHI) in straight sets in the first round on Tuesday night. Though Becker and Golubev have never played before the match is sure to be a serving battle if you look at their 2010 match statistics. Both players have won 82% of their service games, over 70% of their first serve points and an average of 54% of their second serve points. They haven't been dropping the ball when returning serve either this year as they've both converted an average of 45% of their break points.
[1] Radek Stepanek (CZE) vs. Leonardo Mayer (ARG) - not before 2pm
On Thursday when 66th ranked Leonardo Mayer (ARG) plays the 2010 BMW Tennis Championship's No. 1 seed, Radek Stepanek (CZE), on the stadium court, he will be looking to avenge his straight loss to Stepanek at last year's U.S. Open. To reach the second round of the BMW, Stepanek defeated Sergiy Sakhovsky (UKR), 6-1, 6-3, and Mayer defeated Arnaud Clement (FRA), in a tough three set match, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Both Stepanek and Mayer have winning percentages in 2010 but Stepanek has won four titles in his career and Mayer is looking to win his first.
[2] Gilles Simon (FRA) vs. Potito Starace (ITA) - not before 5pm
The second-seeded Simon has played at the BMW Tennis Championship once before, reaching the quarterfinals in 2005. Starace is playing in Sunrise for the fourth time, having reached the quarterfinals in both 2007 and 2008.
Only 25 years old, Simon is currently ranked No. 21, and has been ranked as high as No. 6. His most impressive win came in 2008 over No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of Madrid. Simon is a technically complete player who played near-flawless tennis to beat countryman Richard Gasquet (FRA), 6-4, 6-4, in his opening-round match here at the Sunrise Tennis Club.
Starace has been ranked as high as No. 27. In his opener, the 28-year-old beat Harel Levy (ISR) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
These players’ only previous head-to-head meeting was at the 2007 ATP Masters in Paris, where Simon beat Starace in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
